1. Sometimes doing the right thing is hard. I have posted below some articles about a situation going on in Texas regarding the medical/surgical treatment of minors with gender dysphoria. I stand as I applaud Dr. Eithan Haim. While a surgical resident in the Baylor University system in Houston, Texas, Dr. Haim noticed that even after Gov. Abbott had signed an executive order banning hormone and surgical treatment of minors in 2022 stating that such procedures were considered “child abuse” under existing Texas law, the country’s largest pediatric provider and highly esteemed Texas Children’s Hospital was still rendering this care although denying it publically in 2023. After much consideration of the risks to his financial and career well being, Dr. Haim decided to become a whistle blower and reached out to conservative Christopher Rufo who wrote an article that was published by the City Journal in May 2023. Dr. Haim was careful to redact identifying elements in documents he shared with Rufo. On the day he graduated from residency in June of 2023, federal agents knocked on his door. Dr. Haim invited the agents into his residence, but as his wife is an attorney, he buttoned his lip. The State of Texas did investigate the allegations made by Dr. Haim and after confirming the allegations, Texas Children’s Hospital was forced to cease gender affirming procedures in September 2023. Of note, in May of 2023, the Texas Legislature had passed S.B. 14 which banned medical treatment of gender dysphoria in minors. Recently, Dr. Haim was indicted on 4 felony counts for allegedly violating medical records laws. Vanessa Sivadge is a nurse who also whistle blew on Texas Children’s Hospital. Her observations were that Texas Medicaid was being billed for transgender procedures. Such billing of Medicaid has never been legal in the Lone Star State.
