News from Wednesday’s Ohio legislative session:
1. House Bill 183 (the bathroom bill) was added to Senate Bill 104 as an amendment and passed in the House 60-31. H.B. 183, introduced by Representatives Beth Lear and Adam Bird, requires that Ohio K-12 and college students use only bathrooms and locker rooms on campuses that align with their sex assigned at birth. The bill will now head back to the Senate to concur.
2. Enact Campus Act passed in both the Senate and the House and will now go to Governor DeWine to sign. The bill will require public and private colleges and universities to adopt and then enforce a policy regarding racial, religious and ethnic intimidation and harassment. This legislation came in response to an uptick in violence that has occurred on U.S. campuses since the start of the Israeli-Gaza Conflict.
3. House Bill 531 – Braden’s Law – passed unanimously in the House with 96 votes. The bill will now move forward to the Senate. Braden’s Law will prohibit sexual extortion. H.B. 531 was brought to the House by Representatives Beth Lear and Brian Lorenz. The bill was crafted in response to a sexual extortion incident involving an Olentangy High School student who took his own life as a result of the extortion.
