Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir, ‘but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.” Matthew 21:28-32
There are those who hear the Word of God, believe and do God’s will, those who hear the Word of God, initially reject it but then repent and come to believe in the Word of God and do God’s will. There are others who hear the word of God and say they will follow God’s will outwardly but reject it. This passage is about the action you take when you hear the Word of God. Do you ultimately accept and do God’s will, or do you reject it by your actions and ignore God’s will? Think about how obedient you are to God’s will. Do you struggle with obedience and resist God’s will? You struggle because of man’s fallen human nature. We all must allow God’s grace to fill our hearts as our conscience begins to tell us to act according to God’s will. As we continue to grow in virtue we will become more like Jesus Christ who gave himself to the Father completely.
